Where We Listen & Learn

How your words shape our actions

Our commitment to listening and learning is integral to our DEIB strategy. We use employee engagement and DEIB surveys to gather feedback, address concerns, and ensure an inclusive environment.

While some of our most recent DEIB survey results were favorable, indicating progress, we recognize there is still much work to be done. Supporting our staff with career development and growth has been a key focus area over the past year, and we are dedicated to continuing these efforts.

Our DEIB newsletter, created by staff for staff, shares diverse viewpoints and recognizes various holidays. While our company may not officially recognize every holiday with closures, our newsletter honors these important events, fostering cultural awareness and inclusivity while balancing business needs.

We also support DEIB goals through training sessions and meaningful conversations, promoting continuous learning and cultural humility. These efforts ensure open communication and demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity.

"I let her [Alycia Anderson, "Disabling Ableism" Meaningful Conversations Facilitator & Accessibility Changemaker] know that I felt so inspired and thanked her. After chatting with her, she gave me her number and said now you have another friend for life. Thank you Eden Housing for making me feel like I am at home."

Our DEIB Commitment in Action

This year we conducted special DEIB trainings for our Staff, Board, Executive, and Extended Leadership Teams.

Staff training

Belonging: The Eden Way

To ensure that everyone at Eden Housing feels:

“Active listening is an incredibly important part of team building and community! I really enjoyed the activities and that I was able to communicate with people outside of my department!”

Leadership Training

Embodying Equity in Our Leadership Work

“This was an interactive training that gave us an opportunity to put the tools to use and practice. It was really powerful information and provided tools to help implement it in a meaningful way.”

Providing The Career Information You Asked For!

In response to feedback from the DEIB Survey about transparency in job-related matters, we’ve taken significant steps. We developed and shared resources that clearly explain how jobs are created, updated, and eliminated. Additionally, we’ve focused on the promotion process and preparing staff for new roles. This effort is part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and continuous improvement.

Meaningful Conversations Series

Developed by our DEIB Council, these quarterly conversations provide an invaluable opportunity to invite speakers who share their knowledge and experience on relevant and engaging topics which support our employees.

Listening Circle

In response to the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and ongoing extrajudicial violence, we created a healing circle guided by Yavilah McCoy to foster listening, sharing, and collective support while addressing cultural stressors, wellness needs, and challenges related to family, identity, work relationships, and systemic oppression.

Gender Identity & Pronouns

This engaging session led by Nikk Cochran underscored the importance of using accurate pronouns to affirm individual identities, enhancing our understanding and contributing to a more inclusive and respectful community.

Disabling Ableism

Alycia Anderson presented an inspiring session that allowed us to share our thoughts on her personal story while emphasizing the importance of accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, noting that “disability crosses all racial, cultural, and gender lines that divide us; it’s actually our common ground, not the thing that separates us.”

Volunteerism: Changing Ourselves by Impacting Others

Carrie Grace facilitated a learning experience about the transformative power of volunteering, the importance of empathy as a vital leadership skill, and the lasting impact of our actions on both others and ourselves.

Mentoring

Progress takes time and effort

Eden is committed to continuously making strides with supporting and investing in our employees’ futures.

The Property Operations Department has experienced success in the initial run of a mentoring program that partners an Onboarding Support Manager (OSM) with a new Community Manager to assist them during their first week at Eden. Working together at the OSM’s property, the CM gains hands-on, day-to-day experience before moving on to their assigned property. The success of the program has inspired the Ops team to look into mentoring opportunities for other positions, as well.

Building a stronger foundation for employee success takes time, innovation, dedication, and collaboration. Be on the lookout for future mentoring opportunities to come!
